Seal from master cyl. to resevoir ? What type?
« on: October 17, 2003, 08:09:31 »
I appear to be loosing brake fluid between the plastic resevoir and the master cylinder. I noticed the level had dropped and went looking around the 4 corners of the car. Eventually I spotted the leak. My question is that when I look in the parts book it shows two types, I have the older type but it doesn't show clearly the seals for this.

The picture appears to show one seal and then what looks like an upturned bolt ??

Does anyone know what I should expect to see when I remove the resevoir, and do I just pull it up off the master cylinder. I'd ideally like to have the new parts before I do this so if anyone knows the part numbers ??

Ben in Ireland.

Ben,
You have a parts book, but no parts numbers?  You might want to get a different book!   ;)   I'll look in my book tonight to see if I have anything for the different seal types.

Hi Ben,

Both the front and the back sections of the reservoir connect to the M.C., but they have different rubber seals.
To remove the res., you have to: unscrew the bolt holding the front part that is accessible through the filler cap, and then pull the rear part of the res. straight up and out of the rubber seal in the M.C.   Mine was a tight fit, and I basically just closed my eyes and hoped for the best! Try to squirt some silicone lube in there as you're pulling, and rotate the reservoir at the same time.  It did come out without damaging the little reservoir tube that fits inside the rubber seal.
I had ordered a seal kit for my '65, and received part.# 000-586-01-43 (US$11.50), but the rear rubber seal was too small in diameter.  The front rubber seal looks like a generic o-ring.

Hey Will,
If that rear rubber seal was too small in diameter, what did you use to do the job?
Also was the O_RING in the kit?
I ask because my 250 sl has the older style reservoir.

Bob, I had soaked the old seal in clean brake fluid for several days, and it seemed pliable enough to re-use.  My M.C. had no leaks anywhere prior to removal either.
I did this job last March, but I'm fairly sure there was a new front O-ring as well. The seal kit didn't have many parts - I think just the front and rear seals, and a new hollow bolt for the front mount.  I am pretty sure the front seal is a generic o-ring that you should be able to find aftermarket.  I'll hunt through my stuff to see if I can find the old box the seal kit came in.
