hardtop rear window wood surround replacement
« on: June 11, 2008, 05:51:09 »
Hi- My 1970 280 SL needs a new wood surround for the rear window of the hardtop. Any ideas as to where such pieces might be located?
Thanks,
Terry

Miller's lists them on their web site.  http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~partsort

If that doesn't work, go to millermbz.com, click on the pagoda, search for wood and you will get the page that has wood kits.

If you keep your hard top on the car most of the time, keep in mind that this rear window wood should match the rest of the wood in the car.  Most people have it all restored or replaced at the same time from the same source so it matches.

Here is the list of suppliers that our members maintain.

Miller's sells all kinds of Mercedes parts and probably has good quality wood parts. Heritage Woodworks is often mentioned as a top-notch wood specialty shop.  More expensive, and some people say better product.

I see this is your first post, welcome to the Group!  There's more to it than just this forum.
- You can add yourself to the Frapper map on the home page.
- We have a car registry you can add your vehicle to.
- We are building a technical manual that had tons of information in it.
- Just poke around at everything and have fun.

I bought my dash wood from Heritage. While it was more than the eBay vendors, it was less than Miller's.

Heritage is also a good source to send your old shabby wood to have it refurbished.

I have comments about Heritage...   I went to their website and noticed that the picture that they use of their replacement wood kit is _exactly_ the same photograph as the one used for many of the eBay wood kits.  Both Heritage and various eBay vendors indicate that these kits come from Germany, so Heritage isn't doing the woodwork, they are buying it from the same place that other eBay vendors are buying it from (in my opinion).  It's cheaper on eBay.

Looking just now, I'm not sure it is still the same photo.  But a month ago when I looked it was the same photo.

FYI

I checked.  Heritage updated their photo.  The photo on ebay (search for mercedes 113 wood) is the old photo, the one that Heritage used to use.  I still strongly suspect that it is the same wood kit.

Drew does not claim to make the new sets he sells. He does refurbish old sets, and I have heard the work he does is excellent.

I have not found a satin finish French walnut set on eBay, which is what Heritage offers. They are either the glossy burlwood or polysander.

Heritage has bought some sets from Germany and they are suppose to be the same Walnut finish as original.   BUT....Heritage does refinish sets and highly recommends redoing your original wood.  The new sets have to be trimmed to fit at the front windshield.  This reason alone it enough for me to have my original wood redone.  Heritage Woodworks has an impeccable reputation for the highest quality work.  If you do a search in the various Mercedes forums, you will see nothing but praise!

...which makes me wonder what they charge to re-finish a wood set and how crappy the wood set can be for them to be able to re-finish it.   Any data points out there?
