shipping companies

There have been posts on various forums that I watch and occasionally contribute to, about shipping vintage or antique vehicles. In the past I have put up favorable reviews on Passport, Intercity Lines, and Dependable Auto Shippers, otherwise known as DAS. In the past, DAS shipped two Mini Coopers for me, and did a competent job.
I used them to ship the 280SL I bought in Reno, NV. To date the car is overdue and not here, most of the staff I spoke with were either disinterested or rude, and some appear to be lying, and the car spent a week outdoors in Texas despite DAS informing me that it would be under cover or in the truck the whole time. Finally today I spoke with a DAS employee who was both civil and helpful; the car will not be here for at least two more days, realistically, and could be delayed even further.
At this point I am just hoping that they have not damaged the car. Fortunately a video was shot of the car before shipment, so I have good evidence that it was intact before shipping. I would not use DAS under any circumstances; even a free move anywhere in the country would not be worth the frustration and inaccessibility of dealing with their "customer service" division. All of their people save one were no help at all, and totally disinclined to be of any service.

I believe this is common for many transporters.  I had a very similar experience with intercity after they hauled my 230sl perfectly, just a few weeks later, I hired them to move a fairly new car from SC to me in NJ, and they just kept delaying my order.  Eventually, I couldn't wait any longer, hopped on a plane and drove the car home.  I have heard mixed things about DAS....I guess if I were ever in need of a transporter again, I'd try passport.  Also, for anyone looking at transporters, I would suggest you find a mom-and-pop type transporter, especially if you find one locally, they can be very attentive to your needs.

I recently met someone who runs a shipping business out of the NY area. I asked specifically if they can arrange for shipping of cars overseas and he quiclkly replied yes. If anyone wants details, drop me a line. Seemed like a decent lead.

Hi, All.  I used Mother Haulers to move my now-sold Jag to Sarasota from Sonoma CA.  They were great, right on time and I was in contact with the driver all the way.  So I called them when I bought my little red truck (the 280) and needed to move it from Oklahoma to Sarasota.  They immediately jumped on it, picking up my car almost before I got a chance to transfer the money to the person selling it!  Within 4 hours they were on their way to Sara.  When I had to go to SF around the time she would be arriving, they put her in their Tampa yard under cover.  I called them on my return, and one of their employees who lives in Sara delivered her on her own personal carrier.  Wonderful staff, great communicators.  Anyone needing the contact names, etc. will have to wait til I get back to Sara where all the paperwork resides...
