Kick-down Switch (Automatics)
« on: July 04, 2008, 04:18:38 »
Hi All!

Last Fall, when I removed my kick-down switch, I noticed some odd plastic like material fall out as I unscrewed the switch from the base housing.  Never paid much attention to it at the time...

Now as I am re-installing the switch into the housing, as I tighten the switch into the housing, it does not allow the button to be depressed.  I have to back off the switch several turns to allow the button to be depressed and work... so it works, but the switch seems loose in the housing....

Is there a washer, or other material, that sits in-between the switch and the housing? I dont see this anywhere in the manuals, or even on the SLS parts listing...?

Is anyone familiar with how this should be?

Thank you!
Bob  :)

Hi Glennard,

Yes, does anyone know the answer?  Looking at the SLS parts site, it does not show any add'l parts between the 2 pieces...  yet when I screw mine together all the way, the button no longer depresses???
Thanks,
Bob  :)

Bob,
hi,finally crawled under the car for you.

the wires going to the switch are on a pair of wires one red and one brown.  these are in their own pigtail from the wiring harness.

I looked at the end of the switch. I did not see much that would help you put it back together.

maybe Joe will be able to find the info you need.

Bob,
hi, I just looked in my service manual for passenger cars starting aug 59.

page 27 4/3 has a description of installing and adjusting the kick down switch.

not sure if this help you or not.  let me know if you need me to send you a copy of the page.

Bob, Here's what I found on the 230SL tranny(GA230SL E, 64287 F).
Mounted on the tranny is bundle A.  It has 4 wires in it.  One end goes into the side of the 3 position solenoid on top of the tranny(moves an arm on the right side).  The other end(4 wires) goes to the 3 screw terminal on the lower left side of the tranny.  The black wire(12v moves the solenoid lever forward) goes on the littlest screw(forward). This terminal connects to kickdown switch. The yellow wire(12v moves the solenoid lever backwards) goes on the middle size screw.  This terminal connects to the contact switch on the throttle butterfly.  The 2 big brown wires go on the big rear screw(ground).  Solenoid lever is at rest in the middle when it has no power.
Bundle B on the tranny has one wire(black)-runs between the tranny fluid solenoids(to diaphrams) under plastic screw-on nuts on each side of the tranny.
Bundle C has 4 wires coming out the end, 2wires(kickdown switch) coming out a few inches up it, and 1 wire farther up.  The 3 brown sized wires coming out the end go to the three terminals of the sized screws on the tranny.  The fourth wire(green/red ?) goes to the left side diaphram solenoid.  The 2 wires up the bundle go to the kick down switch via a two wire female connector.  The green/red wire farther up the bundle also goes to the left side diaphram solenoid. Don't know where the other end of bundle C goes- but can guess.  Tie it in with the dismantler's diagram.

Thanks Glennard and all!

I think this post has gotten more complicated than needed.
I really only want to know if there is a washer and/or other material between the kick-down switch and the housing that it screws into.  If I screw my switch in all the way in the housing (tight), the kick-down button under the gas pedal doesnt move.  If I loosen the switch by several turns counter clockwise, the button works, but the switch seems loose...
Does anyone know what, if anything, sits between the 2 parts?
Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,

I may be totally wrong about this (I have only manual transmissions), but do you have the adjustment nut? (#65 in the figure below). Perhaps you need to adjust this nut so that the switch/spring can be tightened into the housing without having to go in all the way, thereby allowing the kickdown switch to still move.

Hello Waqas,

Thanks for sticking with this one... !
The nut you point out actually adjusts the entire housing up and down so that it can be properly setup with the gas pedal.

I am hoping that someone can unscrew their switch and see what, if anything, sits between the switch and housing (besides the spring).
Thanks again!
Bob  :)
