Gear Box Problem.
« on: July 19, 2008, 19:26:24 »
Took my car out for a run this morning and whilst changing gears, the lever suddenly depressed about two inches and went all sloppy.  Was still able to change gears but the lever was lose with out any tension.
If I pulled it up it felt like to came back to the correct position and tension but any downward pressure made it return to a slack state..  I suspect I have lost a tension clip or something but has anyone had this problem before I start pulling it apart?

Thanks
Garry.

The shifter bushings are done.  Time for a new set.  When you pull the shift lever up, you position the bottom end where the bushings used to hold it.

Thanks Raymond,

Does it do any damage driving it in the interim until I get the parts and how difficult is it to replace them.  Can it be done thru the top of the tunnel?

There should be no problem driving with bad shifter bushings, except the occasional "oops I didn't mean to start in third" etc. Replacement is easy through the top access panel and one on the right side.

Here are some relevant threads to familiarize yourself with the procedure:

Thanks both,

Realised that I should have done a search of the forums and the answer would have been there somewhere.  Will see if I can get the bushings and do it this week.
