Dura-lever heater replacemnts??
« on: March 04, 2003, 10:33:43 »
Has anyone had experience with the Dura-Lever replacement levers?  I am on set 2 of the MBZ levers and I am sick of all the work of fixing them.

Any thoughts or comments??

Hello,
Around 1969, US DOT required all US delivery vehicles to have safer, soft dash knobs. The USA 113 delivery cars got new heater levers with rubber-like ends from the factory. Unfortunately sun and ozone degrade this material making it brittle. Often times it just crumbles apart for no apparent reason. Jambed or stiff heater contrlos aggrivate the problem by adding more strain to the assembly. Replacememt of the original levers is expensive and time consuming. The Duro Levers are a less expensive repair and can be replaced in as little as an hour. They do look different and the inner acrylic parts of the lever must be in good shape for them to work. If you have some stuck heater valves or cables, this must be cleared up also. The original levers in contrast may take a novice a couple of days to replace. A experienced technician can accomplish the task in a few hours or more.
My favorite levers for the 113 are the pre 1969 also all euro delivery 113s. They were solid acrylic with a tiny pop-on endpiece. They do not degrade or break like the rubber units. They illuminate much nicer being mostly acrylic also. The pre 1969 or euro W108 sedans used very similar "acrylic" levers which fit 113 cars.

Joe:

I just spent about 6 hours replacing my heater levers. I used levers i bought from a Mercedes Dealer. The knob ends seem like hard rubber???

Are these the ones that get brittle? or will they last awhile?

Hello Richard,
They are a hard rubber like material. The rubber area included the knob and the entire crescent shaped front of the lever. Don't get me wrong. These levers should last fifteen to twenty years under normal use and even longer when leading a pampered life! Hopefully OEM Mercedes Parts are using an improved sythetic material, that will hold up even longer than the originals!

Joe, you just made my day!  I have a '69 Euro that currently has the black duralever heater controls, but if all Euros had the colored acrylic, then I'll be scrounging up a set just as soon as I can!

Thanks again for that little tidbit!

Well, my black ones on a 1970 US model crumbled apart this winter. First one of the little black perpendicular bits came off (lever can still be moved but it's fiddly) and then the one for the up/down airflow control broke off completely  -- probably because the movements was a little stuck.

I spoke with my garage guy and he's going to put in acrylics when it goes in for service in the spring.
