Starter replacement

First time posting, need advice on changinging the starter on a '67 230sl. Nasty little 16mm top bolt, appears to be threaded into the starter housing itself.  Bottom bolt is fixed with a lockwasher and nut.  I can/have removed everthing except the top bolt.  it appears that pulling the exhaust and the tranny dip-stick tube might give me enuff room.....OR pull the engine....OR drag it out of the garage and get some gas and a match.  I notice there is an access panel on the trans tunnel that might give more direct line to the top bolt?? Thanks, Steve.

Yes!
Go thru the xs hole with a 10mm hex socket (allen key) and some extensions.

yep, you can get it thru the access hole.

you may need a universal joint to get the allen fully into the bolt.

If you can have a friend manage the ratchet end while you are under the car helping direct the allen bit end into the bolt.

It can be done but some help will make the job go faster.

note: if you are replacing the unit with a new (rebuilt) unit one of the threaded holes is not threaded. you will need a new bolt and nut.

Well, thanks guys...Worked!  Got the starter off, tested good, and now I'm tracing wires from the starter to alternator to stering wheel lock to ignition.  The problem wasn't the starter, but lack of power TO the starter via the above circuitous route.  MMMMM, boy, I'm having some fun now....Close examination of the wiring in this old and previously abused/neglected machine is not a pretty picture.  Old and frayed OEM wires, poor maintainence and cobbled together band-aids over the years indicate I should just slow down, and re-wire the car.  I can do it wire by wire or try to find a new OEM or quality after market complete wiring harness.  Any opinions on that route?  Thanks, Steve.
