I am in the process rebuilding an early 230 motor. for my 1966 230SL.  The motor was tore down and i noticed it was rebuilt once before with .5mm oversize pistons.  The machine shop says my motor will need to go up one size to 1mm because of wear and the fact that the cyl walls were rusted from sitting too long. Where is a good place to get oversize pistons/rings without re-mortgaging the house?Has does anyone had overheating issues after reboring 1mm on a 230 motor?

No over heating problems until you see the price on pistons. AND, they're the only horse in town so you will have to pay before you can ride. Figure on $1,800.00 or more because MB controls this entirely now.
The only pistons you can get for 230SL are the stepped ones although there may be a few early style 4 ring types still out there.

So I can buy eight pistons for a 38 Packard for $300 and they want $1800?[:(!]

Hi all, on a rebuild what bolts are reusable?  Specifically, I have the flywheel (manual) to crank bolts for my 1966 to reinstall, and they look fine.  The torque is only 50 ft/lbs, so it seems like that's low enough to reuse them, or some high grade bolts from the store.  M-B wants $10 each or $40 each depending on my engine, and they could not figure it out the correct type with my engine number.  Can I reuse the orginals if I don't race the car?

If I remember correctly there is a procedure to check the bolt stretch.

as long as the bolt is with in spec it should be ok to use.

I think this is more important for the head.

if you still want to use new bolts, contact metric motors and buy some from them. I am willing to bet you can get the bolts for much less than mercedes would sell them to you

others may have a different take on the stretch theory

Hi Matt, I understand, however, I could find no specs on the stretch for the flywheel bolts.  You are correct, the heads on these bolts are different, wider and flatter than the bolts in the store, so I'd like to stick with M-B units.  Ron

check with metric motors to see if there is a spec for the flywheel bolt stretch and for pricing on replacement bolts.



in the past on my other cars I reused the flywheel bolts

Dr Benz Thanks for the info.  What is the difference for step pistons versus the original 4 ring type.  My replacements were the 4 ring type.  I had a second question referring to the availibilty of an oil pump and where I could get a new one.  I am wondering why a 2 gear simple pump will cost almost 400.  Is there anyone that has a new unused one for sale that is more reasonable?
