You can get a rebuilt driveshaft from Driveline Services of Portland for $371 including shipping in the continental US. Pretty reasonable Ithink.

I purchased a rebuilt drive shaft from drive line for my 78 300d.

I have not had any problems with the rebuilt drive shaft

Sedan and coupe drive shafts are nearly twice as long as one for a 280sl. there are many other differences including the center carrier bearings and different flex disc configurations.

You might try Bud's Benz near Atlanta.  I was looking for the front section and they quoted $276.00.  If they have the front for me, they may have the back for you.  You might also ask Onanger near San Diego.  I've had good luck with other salvage parts from them.  I know Sun Valley doesn't have one at the moment.
